On Saturday night, 10-1-11, officers of the Abilene Police Street Crimes Unit (SCU) developed information on suspects who were committing vehicle burglaries.

The SCU working in conjunction with the Property Crimes Unit and the Patrol Division conducted a surveillance operation. During this operation, two suspects committed a burglary in a north Abilene parking lot. Patrol officers attempted to stop the suspects who then fled in a vehicle and a chase ensued.

The suspect vehicle struck a utility pole and a parked car. The suspects then fled on foot. One suspect was arrested after a short foot chase. He is Richard Morris Stroope, 8-4-67. The second suspect, Michael Dewayne Stroope, 10-21-70, fled into a residential area.

A search of that area was conducted with the aid of a Department of Public Safety helicopter which just happened to be in the area and volunteered to assist. Michael Stroope was taken into custody after a short period of time.

Richard and Michael Stroope are suspected in multiple vehicle burglaries in the Abilene area. Investigation into these cases is still on-going.

Michael Dewayne Stroope charged with:
Evading Arrest in a Vehicle (felony)
Evading Arrest on Foot (felony)
Burglary of a Motor Vehicle

Richard Morris Stroope charged with:
Evading Arrest (felony)
Theft (enhanced to a felony)
