Local Child Death Trends

The Taylor County Child Fatality Review Team has identified a trend in local child deaths.

From 2010 through 2011, there were 18 child deaths reviewed by the Taylor County Child Fatality Review Team. 83% of those deaths were linked to prematurity, diseases, and disorders.

While many of these deaths were not “preventable”, the Taylor County CFRT wants to stress the importance of proper pre-natal care and genetic screening for diseases and disorders.

Pre-Natal Care

Genetic Screening for Diseases and Disorders

As a team, we want to encourage all mothers to seek medical care as soon as they suspect they are pregnant. Services like www.text4baby.org can assist mothers by sending free text messages throughout the pregnancy and first year of the baby’s life. Those text messages address issues such as pre-natal care, labor and delivery, breastfeeding, safe sleep, nutrition, among many others. It is a free service provided by the National Healthy Mother’s Coalition and the Texas Department of State Health Services.
