Motor Scooter Traffic Crash Involving Fatality (Press Release)

ABILENE, TX – On Monday June 25, 2012 at approximately 8:50 a.m., the Abilene Police Department received a call of a major motor vehicle crash involving one motorcycle and one motor vehicle at the intersection of Hwy 351 and E. Lake Road. Officers arrived on scene and found a 2007 grey Honda Silver Wing motor scooter lying on its side in the intersection with the rider lying in the roadway and receiving medical attention from Abilene Fire Department personnel. Another vehicle, a 2005 white Toyota Corolla, was nearby in the intersection.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the Honda motor scooter had been traveling east in the inside lane of Hwy 351 north bound. The Toyota was traveling south bound on E. Lake Road and appeared to have stopped at the stop sign at Hwy 351. As the Honda approached the intersection, the Toyota entered the intersection traveling south and into the path of the Honda. The Honda struck the Toyota on the passenger side of the vehicle. The operator of the Toyota, Lisa Roberson of Abilene (female, age 50) was the sole occupant in the vehicle. Kenneth Horton of Abilene (male, age 64) was the sole operator of the motor scooter. The preliminary investigation also revealed that Mr. Horton attempted to brake prior to the collision. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. Mr. Horton was transported to Hendrick Medical Center (HMC) by ambulance for treatment of injuries sustained from the collision. He was later pronounced dead at HMC by Justice of the Peace A. L. Deatherage.

Mr. Horton’s family responded to HMC.

This crash is currently under investigation by officers of the Abilene Police Department’s Traffic Division under case # 12-11320 and no charges were filed pending completion of the investigation. No further information about this collision will be released at this time. More information may be released as it becomes available.
