Car Burglar Arrested (Press Release)

ABILENE, TX – On September 13, 2012, officers with the Abilene Police Department initiated surveillance on a known car burglar. Multiple divisions were involved, including the Criminal Investigation Division, Street Crimes Unit, Special Operations Division, and the Patrol Division. Together they collaborated and were able to catch a burglar in the act of entering citizens’ cars. They arrested Randal Day DOB 06/05/61. Day is currently in the Taylor County Jail on an $80,000 bond, charged with four counts of State Jail Felony Theft.

Randal Day told investigators that he targeted unlocked vehicles. If he tried door handles and the doors were locked, he simply bypassed those cars and looked for unlocked vehicles. His goal was reportedly 20 vehicles per night. Additional charges are pending.

Thus far in 2012, there have been 634 motor vehicle burglaries reported to the Department. A high percentage of these vehicles were unlocked at the time of the burglary, and targeted items have included purses, wallets, computers, and firearms. There is no reason these targets of opportunity cannot be lessened. Our citizens are reminded that they are the first line of defense against crime. Citizens need to remove all valuables and lock their vehicles.

Thank you,

Chief Stan Standridge
