ABILENE, TX – At approximately 7:37 pm on September 22, 2012, the Abilene Police Department (APD) responded to a robbery call at the Radio Shack store at 2910 North 1st Street. APD was informed that a masked man had entered the store with a handgun and fled after demanding cash. Officers with the Patrol Division responded to the scene. During this incident, a concerned witness was outside the store and witnessed the fleeing suspect enter a getaway vehicle. The witness notified APD about the incident, via 911, and followed the suspect vehicle at a safe distance while staying on the phone with APD.

As officers converged to the area, the witness confirmed the description of the fleeing suspect vehicle. Officers were quickly able to locate the suspect vehicle. The suspect vehicle was stopped without incident and two occupants were detained. Detectives with the Criminal Investigation Division were summoned to assist in this investigation.

The investigation revealed that only one suspect, while wearing a hoodie and a mask, entered the store armed with a semi-automatic firearm that he brandished while ordering the employees to give him money from the register. There were two employees on-duty at the time of this confrontation. During the investigation, detectives learned that one of the male employees was possibly connected to the crime. Further investigation revealed that this employee had conspired with the two male suspects to commit this robbery. The money from the store and a semi-automatic handgun were recovered.

After being interviewed at the Law Enforcement Center, three suspects were arrested for 1st degree felony aggravated robbery: Johnny Dwayne Collier (DOB: 08/25/1986), Caleb Blane Collier (DOB: 03/18/1989) and Damon Ladae Russell, (DOB: 07/16/1987). They are in Taylor County Jail in lieu of $50,000.00 bond each.

APD is committed to reducing violent crime in the City of Abilene and we are grateful for the willingness of the concerned citizen to be a great witness. The witness’s desire to make a difference in this incident aided immeasurably in clearing this aggravated robbery. APD reminds our community that they are the first line of defense in preventing crime.

This is an active investigation and no further information about this incident will be released at this time.
