ABILENE, TX – Early this morning at 7:05 am, officers with the Abilene Police Department (APD) responded to a major motor vehicle collision involving one motor vehicle and one pedestrian in the 2600 block of S. 1st Street. The initial reporting of a possible collision was relayed to APD dispatch by an employee at a local business. Emergency medical personnel were also dispatched to the scene.

Officers with the Traffic Division responded to conduct the investigation. The preliminary investigation revealed that a blue 2009 Dodge Ram pickup truck, traveling westbound in the outside lane, collided with a female pedestrian that was crossing the roadway while pushing a stroller. The collision occurred while it was still dark on a frigid Thursday morning and while the driver of the truck was making a lane change to the outside lane. The male driver also notified APD dispatch of the collision and was later identified as Mr. Marcus A. Rondot, age 20. There were two companions with the pedestrian near the collision site. All three had just disembarked from a CityLink bus on the south side of the road. The companions had just successfully crossed over to the north side of the roadway when the collision occurred shortly thereafter. Traffic investigators learned that the pedestrian was struck and pushed forward approximately 153 feet before coming to rest on the roadway. The stroller was not occupied by a person and it appears to have been utilized for conveyance purposes. The pedestrian, identified as Tina H. Brown of Abilene (age 44) was taken by ambulance to Hendrick Medical Center where she succumbed to her injuries. She was pronounced deceased by Justice of the Peace Michael McAuliffe. Next of kin was notified. Mr. Rondot was not injured.

The investigation also revealed that the truck was occupied solely by Mr. Rondot. There was no moisture on the roadway at the time of the collision. Blood samples were taken from Mr. Rondot and Ms. Brown. Traffic investigators do not suspect alcohol to be a contributing factor.

No criminal charges have been filed pending further investigation. This investigation continues under case # 13-000171.
