Motor Vehicle Fatality (Press Release)

ABILENE, TX – On January 26, 2013 at 8:13 p.m., officers of the Abilene Police Department responded to a major motor vehicle crash in the 2400 block of South Treadaway Boulevard. The initial officers on the scene discovered a black Honda motorcycle had been southbound on S. Treadaway Boulevard and a blue Mitsubishi Outlander had been northbound on S. Treadaway Boulevard. The driver of the Mitsubishi attempted a left turn to proceed north on to Butternut Street. The crash occurred as the Mitsubishi turned into the path of the Honda motorcycle. Both vehicles came to rest in the 2300 block of Butternut Street. The motorcycle operator and a female passenger were ejected from the motorcycle and came to rest on the roadway approximately 100' south of the area of impact.

The driver of the Mitsubishi is identified as Shawna Alyse Welch, female age 23 of Abilene. Her children, males ages 6 and 4, were backseat passengers in the vehicle. None of the occupants of the Mitsubishi were injured. The operator of the Honda motorcycle is identified as Clayton Dowlin Johnson, male age 18 of Abilene. The rider/passenger of the motorcycle is identified as Chelssi Franklin, female age 23 of Abilene. Both Johnson and Franklin were transported to Hendrick Hospital Trauma Center in critical condition. Both Johnson and Franklin were wearing helmets at the time of the crash. Johnson later died from the injuries he sustained in the crash. Justice of the Peace A.L. Deatherage made the death pronouncement at 10:35 p.m. Franklin was treated for multiple injuries and later underwent surgery for a leg fracture. Her condition was listed as critical at the time of this release.

As part of this investigation, blood samples were taken from Welch and Johnson. The Abilene Police Department Traffic Division continues its investigation into this crash and awaits the results of the toxicology tests. There were no witnesses to the crash.

Next of kin notifications are complete. The family of Clayton Dowlin Johnson requested the services of Abilene Funeral Home, 3349 N. 12th Street. Funeral arrangements are pending at this time.
