Victim Shot In The 2800 Block Of South 22nd (Press Release)

ABILENE, TX – On Tuesday May 2, 2013, at approximately 3:05 a.m., officers of the Abilene Police Department’s Patrol Division responded to an injured subject call at a residence in the 2800 block of S. 22nd Street. Responding officers were advised that a male victim was shot by the victim’s son inside the residence and that the suspect was still at the scene. An officer entered the residence and confronted a male suspect who was uncooperative. This suspect immediately began fighting the officer. The violent struggle moved outdoors where responding officers assisted in making the arrest. The initial responding officer was assaulted and struck in the face several times during his attempt to subdue the suspect. Two officers that assisted in making the arrest were also injured.

The preliminary investigation revealed the following: the suspect was identified as Jonathan Rodriguez (DOB: 07/08/91). The suspect and his father (Juan Rodriguez, age 60) were in an altercation and the suspect produced a handgun. The suspect lives with his parents and they were both home during this incident. The father sought refuge in a bedroom but the suspect shot his father twice; once in the upper back and once in the hand. A .380-caliber handgun was recovered from inside the residence. After the arrest the suspect was searched and found to have a small quantity of marijuana on his person.

The father was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where he was described as having non life-threatening injuries. The officer assaulted was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where he was treated for serious injuries. One of the injured officers also sought treatment and was treated and released. This investigation is ongoing under case # 13-8200. Mr. Jonathan Rodriguez was arrested and taken to county jail for the following offenses: Aggravated Assault Family Violence, Assault on a Public Servant, Resisting Arrest and Possession of Marijuana.
