ABILENE, TX – On Wednesday May 8, 2013, at approximately 2:20 p.m., Officer Jimmy Woods with Abilene Police Department’s (APD) Patrol Division responded to an assist agency call at a location in the 9800 block of West Lake Road. Taylor County Sheriff’s Office detectives requested APD’s assistance reference two subjects they had contacted earlier at a north side metal salvage company. These two subjects, a male and a female, drove a truck to the salvage yard that contained scrap metal. The subjects explained they had removed the metal from a property located on West Lake Road. These subjects insisted no crime had been committed. Officer Woods met with the detectives and the two subjects at the West Lake Road address, along with the property owner that had been summoned to verify the activity. The property owner confirmed that the miscellaneous copper and brass metals that were in the subjects’ possession was his property and that he had not given the subjects permission to remove it. The property owner also indicated that this was not the first time he had been victimized.

During this investigation the description of another involved party, and of a suspect vehicle involved in the above described investigation, was ascertained. That information was disseminated to APD’s Patrol Division. At approximately 4:25 p.m., Officer Jerimiah Torrez located the suspect vehicle, a silver Ford pickup, and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle eluded the officer until pulling into a driveway in the 3600 block of Swenson Street. Officer Torrez caught up to the vehicle and observed two subjects running from the vehicle. A female subject fled on foot and was not located during the preliminary investigation. The male driver continued to flee but Officer Torrez ran after him and arrested him.

Detectives with APD’s Crimes Against Property Unit were summoned to assist. The subjects detained on West Lake Road were identified as Ramon Aguirre, (DOB: 11/10/70) and Anita M. Leal (DOB: 12/16/82). The male driver that fled from Officer Torrez was identified as Rene Leal (DOB: 07/09/76). All three suspects were taken to the Law Enforcement Center and interviewed. The investigation revealed that Mr. Aguirre and Ms. Leal were complicit in the theft of the scrap metals recovered and that those metals were valued at approximately $200. Both of these subjects were arrested for felony Theft and taken to Jones County Jail. Mr. Leal was determined to be Ms. Leal’s brother. Mr. Leal was searched after being arrested and found to be in possession of a small quantity of marijuana. Mr. Leal was arrested for felony Evading Arrest and for misdemeanor Possession of Marijuana. He was transported to Taylor County Jail.

The collaboration in this investigation with the Sheriff’s Office was key in identifying these suspects. APD’s theft investigation is ongoing under case # 13-8671.
