ABILENE, TX – Saturday afternoon (March 13, 2014) at about 5:05 p.m., officers with the Patrol Division responded to an armed robbery call at a convenience store in the 1200 block of North Treadaway Boulevard. The store clerk notified Abilene Police Department that she had just been robbed by a male subject armed with a handgun and that the suspect fled on foot with stolen monies. The calling party was able to provide the suspect’s description and his last known direction of travel, including her observations when she saw the suspect enter and flee in a getaway vehicle occupied by several other subjects. Before being made aware of the suspect vehicle’s actual description, a patrol officer recalled observing a vehicle during his response that turned out to be the suspect vehicle. The officer then alerted other responding units of the suspect vehicle’s last known direction of travel. Another responding patrol officer noted the valuable information that had just been relayed and began trying to locate the suspect vehicle while responding on North 1st Street; his efforts were successful. This officer observed the suspect vehicle traveling westbound on South 1st Street with his vantage point obscured by a moving train. The observant patrol officer continued to keep visual contact with the vehicle from the other side of the train and eventually observed the suspect vehicle drive onto the parking lot of a hotel in the 3100 block of South 1st Street. The officer was finally able to respond directly to the hotel area after the train passed. The patrol officer made several key observations while at the hotel and eventually detained three female subjects walking away from the suspect vehicle. The preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle located at the hotel was the getaway vehicle and that one of the females detained had been residing at the hotel. The preliminary investigation also revealed that the armed suspect was inside a hotel room.

SWAT’s tactical unit and their negotiators were called to the scene to assist while Patrol Division officers continued to assist with the investigation and secure a perimeter around the hotel. Initial attempts to communicate with the suspect were unsuccessful. During this time, detectives with the Criminal Investigation Division also responded to assist. Detectives wrote a search warrant for the hotel room and the suspect vehicle while attempts to contact the suspect were made. Negotiators eventually began speaking with the suspect inside the hotel room. The suspect eventually agreed to exit his hotel room and he surrendered to officers at about 6:50 p.m. He was identified as Marvin R. Walton (DOB: 01/09/88). Walton and several associates were taken to the Law Enforcement Center for questioning. The search warrant was obtained and executed.

The investigation revealed that Walton entered the convenience store and held the handgun while demanding monies from the clerk. Walton’s crime was captured on video surveillance. The handgun used in the robbery was located and seized, along with stolen monies. No other subjects were arrested in connection with the robbery and no one was injured. Walton was arrested for 1st-degree felony Aggravated Robbery and taken to county jail where his bond was later set at $100,000.
