ABILENE, TX – A spirit of generosity and desire to make a difference for our Department resulted in the recent gifting of ballistic vests for Patrol Division’s four K-9s. The four vests were purchased during first-quarter 2014 and will replace vests that were in the Department’s inventory in the past. But those vests were more than 10-years old and many did not fit our current K-9 partners. The donations for these vests came from the HEB organization and from Class 21 of the Department’s Citizen’s Police Academy (CPA).

The Abilene Police Department is excited about this wonderful gesture of commitment and would like to invite the media to a press event at the front entrance of HEB (1345 Barrow Street) on June 4th, at 9 a.m. The press event will be attended by Chief of Police Stan Standridge; Lieutenant Gerald Moran, K-9 Unit Commander; Mr. David McKenzie, HEB Unit Director; members of CPA Class 21; and several K-9 officers and their K-9 partners.

These vests will provide our K-9s with a high level of protection when their deployment encounters certain dangers such as high-risk warrants and violent armed offenders. Each vest has been specifically fitted to the K-9’s body type. The average service-cycle of a police service canine is about 8 - 10 years, for which we anticipate these vests lasting, at the minimum. The purchase amount for these vests was just under $4,000.

Police K-9’s can detect narcotics, help track down persons who have evaded apprehension, and they can assist officers during high-risk or violent arrest situations. K-9’s are partners with officers and directly assist in the investigation of crimes, and they ultimately provide exemplary and dedicated service to our community.

It is with heartfelt appreciation that we thank these community partners and recognize their contribution Wednesday morning, June 4, 2014. The public is welcomed to attend.
