FATALITY COLLISION -- 3200 US HIGHWAY 83 SOUTHBOUND (WINTERS FREEWAY)

Abilene, TX- On Friday December 19th, at approximately 5:55 p.m., Officers of the Abilene Police Department’s Patrol division responded to a call of a major vehicle collision in the 3100 block of southbound U.S. Highway 83 also known as the Winters Freeway. First responders arrived on scene and located several vehicles that had been involved in separate collisions.

During the investigation of the collision involving a white 2013 Chevrolet Silverado, white 2013 Toyota Corolla and a dark Blue 2011 Jeep Cherokee it was revealed that as the 3 vehicles were approaching the Buffalo Gap road exit area they saw a backup of cars related to previous collisions. As traffic slowed rapidly, a vehicle that was between the Toyota and Chevrolet truck rapidly moved to the left to avoid striking the Toyota. The Toyota was then struck from behind by the Chevrolet pickup that could not stop in time. This collision caused extensive damage to the back end of the Toyota. The Toyota was propelled forward into a side slide where the back driver’s side door area of the Toyota struck the Jeep Cherokee that was traveling in front of the Toyota. The Toyota then travelled down the embankment and came to rest in the 3200 block of South Clack.

The Toyota had 2 occupants. The driver, a 22 year old female identified as Christen Avery , and her 4 year old son were both transported to Hendrick Medical Center for their injuries. The 4 year old, who was strapped into a child safety seat, suffered from life threatening injuries and was ultimately flown by AirEvac to Cooks Children’s Hospital where he was pronounced deceased upon arrival. The mother who was seat belted, was treated and released this same night.

The driver of the Jeep Cherokee, 50 year old female identified as Kimberly Price, suffered minor injuries and was transported to Hendrick Medical Center where she was ultimately released. The driver of the Chevrolet was a 40 year old male identified as James Kennedy and not injured. Both of these drivers were also wearing seatbelts.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this collision. This collision is being investigated by the Traffic Division under case number 14-24974. More information may be released as the investigation allows.
