Abilene, TX – On Saturday April 4th, at approximately 10:12 p.m., Officers of the Abilene Police Department’s Patrol division responded to a call of a major motor vehicle collision in the 7700 block of Buffalo Gap Road. First responders arrived on scene and located the involved vehicle, a white 2002 Lincoln 4-door. Due to the injuries of the occupants the Abilene Police Department Traffic division responded to assist with the investigation.

The investigation revealed that there were two occupants in the vehicle. Nicholas Rayburn, age 17, was the driver and his mother, Sara Crutcher age 45, a passenger. The vehicle was traveling south when Nicholas swerved to avoid an object in the roadway. The vehicle lost traction and began sliding sideways. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a large tree with the driver side door. Both occupants were transported to Hendrick Medical Center for their injuries. Nicholas sustained life threatening injuries and died at approximately 3:35 a.m. Sara Crutcher is in stable condition and being treated for injuries sustained during the crash.

At this point in the investigation alcohol is not believed to be a contributing factor to the crash. Witness’s report a citizen stopped to help right after the crash but left prior to first responders getting on scene. Investigators would like to speak to this potential witness. We would like for them to contact the Abilene Police Department’s Traffic Division who is investigating the collision under case number 15-6659.
