Fatality Vehicle Crash - Interstate 20 @ Shirley Road (Press Release)

On Friday, May 22nd, 2015 at 10:45 p.m., the Abilene Police Department responded to a call of a major motor vehicle collision near the overpass of Interstate 20 at Shirley Road. Upon arrival, officers observed a white 2008 Mercury Mountaineer with heavy damage resting in a creek bed under Interstate 20.

Prior to the crash, the SUV had been traveling eastbound on Interstate 20 and moved left into the grassy center median. The vehicle continued eastbound for a short distance in the grass median before falling from the Interstate overpass onto Shirley Rd. After the vehicle impacted Shirley Rd. it continued eastbound and came to rest in a creek to the east of Shirley Rd.

There were three occupants in the vehicle at the time of the collision. The driver, a 38 year old female, was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Mike McAuliffe. The two passengers were male, age 43 and 41. Both passengers were transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. At this time, the names of the involved parties are being withheld pending next of kin notification.

It is known that the driver and at least one passenger were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. It is unknown whether alcohol or drug use may have been a factor in this collision. Officers of the Abilene Police Department’s Traffic Division will be conducting the follow up investigation into this matter.

An update will be provided with names of the involved parties at a later time.
