ABILENE, TX – On September 29, 2015 at 3:31 pm, the Abilene Police Department received a call of an attempted kidnapping near Bonham Elementary School. The School Resource Officer (SRO), along with detectives from the Special Victims Unit responded to investigate.
The child, a 2nd grader at Bonham, reported a suspect approached her as she was walking home from school, grabbed her, and she broke free.

Over the course of the next two days, detectives investigating this case began to uncover information that contradicted the child’s version of events. There were other children in the area at the time of the alleged offense along with school district personnel and a citizen, yet no one witnessed anything that resembled the child’s allegation. The parents were informed of these findings and confronted their child who admitted to creating this event in an attempt to deflect attention from an altercation with another student.

Chief Stan Standridge offered the following comments:
“Upon receiving the news that the attempted abduction had not occurred, I was thankful. I am thankful for a community that rallied around our most vulnerable, and I am thankful for a school district and police department that worked together seamlessly. We all need to be mindful that this child is only eight years of age. The Department will fully support the child and parents as they seek restoration.”

AISD Superintendent Dr. David Young also offered his comments:
“I am certainly relieved to know that an abduction attempt did not occur on one of our campuses. I am thankful that one of our students was not in a dangerous situation. I am also very pleased with the high level of collaboration that occurred between our school district and the Abilene Police Department. It is always important to assess our safety and security protocols and response systems. “
