Traffic Enforcement (Press Release)

Dear Community Partners,

Last year Chief Stan Standridge completed a Strategic Business Plan for the Abilene Police Department. This document lists several key goals for the department. One of the goals is to reduce the number of traffic collisions in the city by 3%.

To try and reach this goal the Police Department has identified the areas of town where most of the collisions are occurring. The first area focused on was Southwest Drive from Danville south to Wal-Mart and then the area around the Mall of Abilene. Those efforts resulted in a noticeable reduction in the number of collisions for those areas.

The Police Department is now going to shift its focus to South 14th street from Sayles west to Danville. The Traffic and Patrol Division are going to focus their enforcement in this area to gain voluntary compliance with traffic laws and reduce the number of collisions. The public should expect to see an increase in the number of traffic stops in this area. The most common violations are the failure to yield the right of way and unsafe lane changes.

We would ask that the public use caution when driving not only in this area but at anytime they are driving.

Thank you,

Sgt. Richy Waggoner
Traffic Commander
Abilene Police Department
