The Abilene Police Department has received an increasing number of complaints about citizens selling live animals on the side of the road on private property. The City of Abilene Municipal Code Section 2.4.3.3 requires itinerant businesses to meet several criteria to include obtaining a permit from the city to temporarily sell goods and/or services inside of the city limits. This section strictly prohibits itinerant businesses from obtaining a permit to sell live animals. In this section, itinerant businesses include citizens who are not associated with a business, yet who sell live animals in private parking lots. We are asking the community for assistance in helping to stop these unlawful sales by using lawful means such as newspaper or online advertisements in lieu of roadside selling. As a result of the increased complaints, enforcement options will be considered to help stop these unlawful sales. The fine for this offense is up to $500 for every day the violation occurs.
