Passing an Emergency Vehicle (Press Release)

by Public Information Officer, Friday, November 18, 2011, 01:00 (2776 days ago)

Over the past weeks several Abilene police officers have reported that when emergency vehicles are on the side of the road with their emergency lights on they are being passed very closely by other cars travelling very fast. We would like to remind the public that this is very dangerous to both the emergency personnel and the citizens that are being contacted.

In light of the changes in Section 545.157 of the Traffic Code that includes fire trucks and tow trucks as well as police vehicles it states that when approaching an emergency vehicle on the roadway with activated emergency lights you should always vacate the lane nearest the emergency vehicle if there are two or more lanes. If this is not possible then you should decrease your speed to at least 20 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit until you are past the emergency vehicle.

We are putting out this reminder to slow down and move over so we can all have a safer holiday season.
