At 9:00 PM last night, the Abilene Police Department was contacted via 911 that a male had been shot in the 800 block of Sammons Street. APD Headquarters dispatched patrol units, fire and emergency medical personnel to the scene. Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division assumed control of the investigation and were further assisted by officers with the Street Crimes Unit. Sgt. Lynn Beard with the Crimes Against Persons unit assumed command of the crime scene. Preliminary investigation revealed that a white male, Lloyd Shelton III, age 19, had been shot once in his back after being involved in an altercation. A suspect was not at the crime scene upon police arrival. Initial indicators suggest that the altercation may have involved narcotics. The victim was transported to Hendrick Medical Center and said to be in serious condition, but expected to survive his injuries. A black male named Michael K. Higgins, DOB: 10/19/92 was eventually identified as a suspect.

At 5:30 AM this morning, a search and arrest warrant for Michael Higgins, for 2nd Degree Aggravated Assault with a deadly weapon, was executed by the Abilene Police SWAT team in the 1600 block of S. Willis Street. Mr. Higgins was taken to the Law Enforcement Center for questioning and subsequently transported to the Taylor County Jail. His bond has been set at $125,000.00.

The investigation is actively on-going.
