The latest member of the Abilene Police Department (APD) has four legs and received his training in Germany. Thor, our new K-9, was deemed fit for duty by a local veterinarian and officially accepted by the Department on April 30th.

Previously, we had announced that H-E-B had partnered with APD to provide funding for our latest police service animal (K-9). Thor is replacing K-9 Diablo who was retired from active duty due to a debilitating health condition. He will be partnered with Diablo’s current handler, Officer Joshua New. Thor’s training is progressing. He comes to Abilene with two certifications from Germany which will reduce his training time from eight weeks to four. He is currently being trained in narcotic detection and obedience.

We are grateful for H-E-B’s generosity. To celebrate, we are holding a media event at the Abilene H-E-B store on May 10, 2012, at 1:30 PM. Our citizens and media partners are invited to attend this event which will showcase Thor and Officer New. Mr. David McKenzie, H-E-B Unit Director, and several visiting members of the H-E-B community will be in attendance.

We anticipate many years of dedicated service to our community as Thor is integrated into the Department. We thank H-E-B for their on-going support of law enforcement and our community. We know that their partnership decision provides our city with an important tool in the fight against crime.

Officer New and K-9 Thor will be available for photographs and interviews. A photo of the new partners is attached.
