Vehicle and Bicyclist Crash, Case #12-9352 (Press Release)

At approximately 1650 hrs today, officers of the Abilene Police Department were dispatched to a major crash involving a bicyclist and a motor vehicle at the intersection of South 3rd St. and Mockingbird Lane. Witnesses reported that an unrelated vehicle was stopped eastbound at the stop sign in the 2900 block of South 3rd at Mockingbird Lane. The bicyclist (Unit 2, operated by Carter Martin, age 26, of Abilene) was stopped at the stop sign adjacent to the passenger side of the unrelated vehicle. The unrelated vehicle proceeded eastbound across Mockingbird Lane followed by the bicyclist a few seconds later. An involved vehicle (Unit 1, a black Chevy Trailblazer operated by Martin Burleson of Abilene) was southbound in the outside lane in the 200 block of Mockingbird Lane. Unit 2 continued eastbound into the intersection and failed to yield the right of way to unit 1, striking unit 1 in the passenger side. Mr. Martin was thrown from the bicycle and sustained serious injuries. Mr. Martin was transported to Hendrick Medical Center (HMC) where he was listed in critical condition and taken to surgery. Mr. Martin was not wearing a helmet. Mr. Burleson and his passenger were not injured.

Mr. Martin’s family was notified and was present at HMC.

Officer Jeff Hogue is the lead traffic investigator for this investigation that is currently on going.
