ABILENE, TX – On Friday evening, July 6, 2012, at approximately 10:30 pm, the Abilene Police Department (APD) received a call of a major motor vehicle crash in the 3000 block of Newman Road that involved a vehicle that left the roadway and crashed into a natural gas metering station near East Highway 80. As previously reported in an information release from Lt. Greg Goettsch with the Abilene Fire Department, efforts to locate occupants that had been inside the vehicle at the time of the crash were unsuccessful.

On July 9, 2012, Officer Kelly Willis with the Traffic Division conducted the follow-up investigation into this crash. His investigation led him to the registered owner of the vehicle, identified as Mr. Kevin T. Knight. Mr. Knight is age 54 and an Abilene resident. The investigation revealed that APD officers had gone to Mr. Knight’s residence in the 3300 block of Newman Road shortly after the crash and were unable to locate him there. A follow-up attempt to locate him at his residence was again made during the morning hours of July 7th and an APD officer made contact with Mr. Knight. When Officer Willis met with Mr. Knight, Mr. Knight confirmed that he was the sole occupant and driver of the 2005 Nissan Armada that was lying on its side at the crash site. Mr. Knight explained that he lost control of his vehicle and then left the scene. Mr. Knight had non-incapacitating injuries and was cited for two traffic violations: failed to move right with safety and failed to comply after striking a fixed object.

This investigation is now concluded.
