ABILENE, TX – On the morning of August 8, 2012, at 5:22 AM, the Abilene Police Department received a 911 call from a residence in the 1400 block of N. 17th. The female caller reported that her estranged husband had broken into the home and was threating to kill her with a gun. He then began talking about killing himself and walked outside of the residence. As officers were responding, the female caller reported that the husband was in the back yard of the residence still holding the gun.

Multiple officers arrived on the scene and began searching for the suspect. Shortly after their arrival, the suspect was located in a shed in the back yard of the residence. The suspect pointed his gun at the officers and the officers responded by firing upon the suspect. The suspect was hit and was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The suspect, a 49 year old male, will be sent for an autopsy in Fort Worth.

Our preliminary investigation indicates that two officers fired upon the suspect and he was hit multiple times. We have recovered the suspect’s weapon which was a loaded revolver.

As with any officer involved shooting, we are conducting a joint investigation with the Texas Rangers. The officers involved will be on administrative leave. At this point, it appears that the officers’ acted with necessary and reasonable force. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased and the officers. This unfortunate event will carry a lasting, traumatic impact on all involved.
