ABILENE, TX – On September 3, 2012, an Abilene Police Department School Resource Officer (SRO) received a tip through Crime Stoppers alleging a hazing incident involving Wylie High School football players. The SRO notified Wylie Administration of the complaint. Thereafter, with the full cooperation of Wylie school officials, the Police Department conducted a thorough criminal investigation. Specifically, the SRO and other Youth Division employees investigated an allegation of hazing that had occurred in a Wylie locker room after football practice. The Education Code, section 37.152, prohibits hazing, which is further defined as:

Any intentional, knowing, or reckless act, occurring on or off the campus of an educational institution, by one person alone or acting with others, directed against a student, that endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student for the purpose of pledging, being initiated into, affiliating with, holding office in, or maintaining membership in an organization.

As a result of this investigation, the Abilene Police Department interviewed more than thirty people. Five suspects were named as a result of the investigation. All victims of the hazing offense indicated there were no physical injuries to any persons. The victims of the hazing offense did not wish to prosecute, and they and their parents signed release forms indicating their unwillingness to consider criminal charges. This investigation was completed on Thursday, September 20, 2012, and will be forward to the District Attorney’s Office for their review. Because this offense involves multiple juveniles, State law prohibits the Police Department from releasing further details. The Police Department is committed to the safety of our community. All community members are asked to recognize that hazing is inappropriate and illegal in most cases.
