ABILENE, TX – On Thursday, March 14, 2013 at approximately 2:30 p.m., officers of the Abilene Police Department’s Patrol and Traffic Divisions responded to a call of a major motor vehicle crash in the 4600 block of West Lake Road. Officer David Thompson of the Traffic Division was driving southbound on West Lake Road when he came upon the crash scene that had occurred only moments earlier. The preliminary investigation revealed that witnesses observed the crash involving a red 2013 Ford Mustang GT. The Mustang was traveling southbound on West Lake Road when it passed another southbound vehicle at a high rate of speed. The vehicle lost control as it passed the other vehicle, spun clockwise, and then slid westward off the roadway. The male driver was the sole occupant and had to be extricated from the vehicle by firefighters of the Abilene Fire Department. He was identified as Mr. Lane C. Herttenberger (age 57) of Abilene. Mr. Herttenberger succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by Justice of the Peace Mike McAuliffe.

At this point in the investigation it is unknown if alcohol was a contributing factor. The driver was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. This crash is under investigation by the Abilene Police Department’s Traffic Division. More information may be released as the investigation allows.
