On April 7, 2014 at 6:57 p.m., Abilene 911 received a call of a shooting at Kirby Lake Park. The caller, Jim Bundick, informed dispatchers that he just shot someone in the park near the water. Upon arrival, responders located the victim, John Morrow, age 44, near the waterline. He had suffered an apparent gunshot wound just below the waist. Morrow was transported to Hendrick Medical Center and is still listed in critical condition.

The investigation has revealed that Bundick drove to Kirby Lake Park looking for his wife. Upon arrival at the lake, Bundick located his wife and Morrow in a vehicle parked near the water’s edge. As Bundick approached the vehicle, Morrow exited and a verbal confrontation ensued between the two men. Bundick then drew a 9mm pistol and fired once at Morrow, striking him below the waist. Morrow fled the area and collapsed a short distance away.

Bundick then contacted 911 and informed dispatchers of the situation. Bundick surrendered without incident to responding patrol officers. He was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault, a second degree felony. Bundick’s bond was set at $30,000.

This shooting occurred near the water and quite some distance from the ball fields. The ball fields were out of range of the shooting and no families or children were in danger.
