Motor Vehicle Fatality 1400 N. Mockingbird (Press Release)

ABILENE, TX- On Saturday, April 12th, at approximately 4:57 p.m., Officers of the Abilene Police Department’s Traffic and Patrol division responded to a call of a major vehicle collision in the 1400 block of North Mockingbird. First responders arrived on scene and located the involved vehicle, a silver 2006 Ford Taurus, and a white bicycle.

The investigation revealed that the Taurus was driven by Dallas Murphy age 35. The bicycle was being ridden by Jesus Tijerina age 64. The Taurus was traveling South in the outside lane of 1400 North Mockingbird. The pedalcyclist was traveling West on N. 14th attempting to cross Mockingbird and failed to yield right of way to the Ford Taurus. The driver of the Taurus attempted to avoid the pedalcyclist by braking heavily and swerving to the left. The driver of the Taurus was unable to avoid the collision, and the right front of the car struck the bicycle and the rider. The pedalcyclist was transported to Hendrick Medical Center with life threatening injuries. The driver of the Taurus was not injured. Jesus Tijerina died Sunday night at Hendrick Medical Center.

At this point in the investigation alcohol and speed of the vehicle are not believed to have been a contributing factor. This collision is under investigation by the Abilene Police Department’s Traffic Division under case number 14-6798. More information may be released as the investigation allows.
