Motor Vehicle Accident (Press Release)

On 05 March 2011 at 0715, Officers of the Abilene Police Department’s Traffic Division were called to the scene of a major motor vehicle accident. The location of the collision was southbound US 83/277, approximately 0.2 mile north of the Business 83 (Pine Street) Y intersection.

A red 2001 Mercedes 2 door had been southbound on US 83 and left the roadway to the left into the grass and dirt median. The Mercedes then continued to travel southbound in the median for approximately 786’ before it began to roll. It rolled an unknown number of times before coming to rest on its right side approximately 1194’ south of where it left the roadway. The lone occupant of the Mercedes was the driver. He was seat belted in the vehicle and was not ejected.

Evidence found at the scene and statements from the initial calling parties indicate that this collision may have happened sometime before dawn. An exact time of the collision is not available at this time. Initial evidence found at the scene indicate that excessive speed may have contributed to this collision.

The driver of the vehicle is a 24 year old black male from Abilene. He was transported to Hendrick Medical Center and is undergoing treatment at the time of this release. Hendrick Trauma Center personnel listed his condition as critical. The driver’s name will not be released at this time, next of kin has not yet been notified.
