Lateral Officers (Press Release)

The Abilene Police Department is still accepting applications for lateral officers. This will be a perpetual process; however we will begin processing current applications April 1, 2011. Those interested can contact the Abilene Police Department’s Training Academy or they can also log onto the Abilene Police Departments website (www.abilenepolice.org) and follow the links for an application. The applicants must be a certified Texas Peace Officer and be licensed by TCLEOSE. The following are the minimum requirements for applicants:

Experience and training equivalent to APD patrol officer and must have been employed by a Texas LE agency within the past year. Training and experience equivalency will be evaluated by the Oral Board. There is no longer a minimum experience requirement.

  • US Citizen
  • Max age: 35 or 44 with preferably 5 years cumulative LE or military experience or 45 with 5 years continuous LE or military experience.
  • Fluently speak, read, and write English
  • Meet physical requirements
  • 20/20 corrected vision
  • High school or equivalent
  • 45 college-level hours or 30 college-level hours with 2 years of full-time, continuous LE experience or the ability to obtain 30 hours before probation period is over.
  • Possess a Texas DL
  • Not addicted to narcotics and does not excessively use intoxicants
  • Never convicted of a Class A or above
  • Not under indictment
  • Never confessed to a felony offense
  • No DWI convictions within the past 10 years/not a habitual traffic violator No family violence convictions
  • Has not been less than honorably discharged
