Vehicular Homicide Investigation

ABILENE, TX – Police were called out to the intersection of South 7th and Butternut street at 12 a.m. for reports of a man being hit by a car. Police arrived on the scene to find Jesse Cortinez, DOB 3-12-1956, deceased. Several calls came into dispatch stating that a dark colored vehicle had struck Mr. Cortinez and left the scene. Witnesses who saw the incident gave a direction of travel for the suspects’ vehicle. Police located a vehicle matching that description blocks away behind a residence. Multiple people were detained and after investigating, the 16 year old driver was arrested and charged with homicide.

The investigation revealed Mr. Cortinez was approached by the 16 year old to purchase alcohol for him. Mr. Cortinez refused and walked away. The 16 year old then ran the victim over and fled the scene. The body of Mr. Cortinez will be transported for an autopsy. The 16 year old juvenile was arrested and is being held at the Taylor County Juvenile Detention Center. Detectives are still investigating the incident.
