Traffic Fatality 5600 South 1st (Press Release)

On Thursday, March 24, 2016 at approximately 12:05 A.M., the Abilene Police Department received a call of a traffic hazard in the roadway of the 5600 block of South 1st. Patrol officers responded to the location where they observed numerous pieces of wooden guard rail posts in the roadway. Upon further investigation, a tan 2000 Chevrolet Blazer was located in the drainage ditch between the East and West bound lanes of South 1st. on it's passenger side.

The preliminary investigation indicated that the Blazer had been traveling westbound on South 1st. The vehicle left the roadway to the South of the westbound lanes and drove west in the median before striking the inside portion of the guard rail. After impact with the guardrail, the vehicle continued to travel west through the grass median before falling into the drainage ditch.

There was one occupant in the vehicle at the time of the collision. The driver, Aimee Michelle Bennett, 23 years of age, of Sweetwater, Texas, was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Michael McAuliffe, who also ordered that an autopsy be performed. The driver of the Blazer was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle during the collision. It is unknown if intoxication will be a factor in this collision however, the investigation is ongoing by officers of the Abilene Police Department Traffic Division. Next of kin has been notified.
