ABILENE, TX – In recognition of Child Abuse Awareness month, the Abilene Police Department, the Abilene/Taylor County Child Advocacy Center, the Abilene and Wylie Independent School Districts, PrimeTime Family Entertainment and the Performance Lab have teamed up to help bring awareness to child abuse. The Loose Change for Change contest is a competition between competing third grade classes at Wylie and Abilene schools. Students were asked to bring loose change in hopes of increasing awareness to our community. 3rd Graders from Abilene and Wylie schools raised nearly $6,000 dollars. The winning classes are Mrs. Wills class from Ortiz and Mrs. Redden’s class from Wylie.

According to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, in 2016 for Texas Region 2, a 31 county wide area which includes Taylor County, there were nearly 10,000 victims of child abuse. This equals to about 27 cases of child abuse per day. Child Advocacy professionals and Law Enforcement want to help bring statistics down by increasing awareness.

The winning third grade classes will be rewarded this Friday, April 21st at 5:30 p.m. at PrimeTime Entertainment, located 4541 Loop 322. Students will receive a free meal, bowling and miniature golf along with a mini-workout by The Performance Lab Coach, Bennie Wylie. Speakers will include 1-Kingdom, AISD and Wylie Administrations, and the Abilene Police Department.
