by Traffic Division, Sunday, July 09, 2017, 23:27 (133 days ago)

On Sunday, July 9th, 2017 at approx. 7:04 pm, the Abilene Police Department responded to a call of a major motor vehicle collision on Interstate 20 near the Winters Freeway. The initial call indicated that a vehicle had rolled over and one person appeared to be deceased.

The investigation indicates that a 2001 Lincoln Navigator, driven by April Cortez, 29, of Abilene and a 2002 Ford Mustang, driven by Kendall Thompson, 18, of Louisiana, were westbound on Interstate 20. The Mustang began to pass the Navigator and lost traction with the roadway, striking the Navigator. The Navigator was forced from the roadway and rolled over. One occupant of the Navigator, seven year old Jae-vion Christian, was pronounced deceased at the scene by Justice of the Peace Frank Cleveland.

At this time, there is no suspicion that alcohol or drugs were a factor in this collision.

This investigation is being conducted by members of the Abilene Police Department's Traffic Division. More information may be released as it becomes available.
