ABILENE, TX – The Abilene Police Department will begin enforcing traffic violations in school zones in Abilene beginning this week. With school back in session for area school districts and private schools, the Abilene Police Department wants citizens to know that officers will be patrolling school zones looking for several violations including, but not limited to, using electronic devices such as cell phones for texting, speeding, parking violations, and failing to yield right of way at crosswalks.

The safety of students is paramount, and by focusing on school zones in the City, APD hopes to bring awareness to drivers. A driver’s main focus while behind the wheel should remain on the road and watching for pedestrians and bicycles. Officers will rotate to the various school zones both in the morning, before the start of school, and when school lets out for the next few weeks. The Abilene Police Department encourages drivers to educate themselves on school zone rules of the road, and abide by them in order to keep from getting into a crash, or receiving a citation.
