APD Warns of Scammers Targeting Citizens (Press Release)

by Public Information Officer, Thursday, April 26, 2018, 10:24 (150 days ago)

ABILENE, TX – The Abilene Police Department wants to warn citizens of a person or persons soliciting money and personal information from homeowners and other citizens by phone. These scammers claim to be collecting money on behalf of the Abilene Police Department for unpaid tickets, Jury Duty notification or other seemingly credible reasons. The caller asks the citizen to make payment by purchasing a gift card. These criminals may be using social media and the internet to gain information about you to personalize the phone call. Citizens receiving such a phone call should not give any information or make any such purchase and immediately hang up. Anyone receiving a call like this can report it to the Department via the non-emergency number, (325) 673-8331.

The Police Department received information from the Abilene Independent School District that several of their teachers and employees were targeted using this method. Citizens should remember that the Abilene Police Department does not contact anyone in this manner. You should never give any personal information over the phone.

Respectfully,

Rick Tomlin
Public Information Coordinator
