ABILENE, TX – Police Dispatch received a call at 6:50 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2018, reporting an injured 52 year old woman in downtown Abilene. The woman, Evadean Owens, was operating a horse-drawn carriage in the Western Heritage Parade when her horse bolted.

Witnesses say the horse reacted when motorcyclists, who were also in the parade, revved their engines under the underpass of North First at Oak St. The southbound horse and carriage went over the median into the northbound lane causing Owens to be thrown from and under the carriage. The horse broke free from the carriage after it hit a nearby sign. Traffic Officer David Thompson was then able to capture the horse without further incident. Owens was transported to the hospital and no other injuries were reported. No citations were issued. Owens was driving Senator Dawn Buckingham and one of her aides in the parade as part of the procession.

City of Abilene Street Sweepers were not involved in the incident as some have reported.
