Fatal Collision on Interstate 20 (Press Release)

ABILENE, TX – a 55 year old Abilene man passed away from injuries sustained in a collision on Interstate 20. Ervin Newman, of Abilene, was transported to Hendrick Medical Center with life-threatening injuries after his Dodge Ram truck collided with a parked semi-tractor trailer.

Synopsis: On Friday, March 29, 2019 at 7:12 a.m., the driver of a semi-tractor-trailer heading west on Interstate 20 stopped to assist another motorist who had flipped his 18-wheeler while attempting to merge onto I-20 from Hwy. 277. The first driver had pulled onto the shoulder of the interstate just west of on onramp. Mr. Newman was attempting to merge onto I-20 using the same on-ramp when his vehicle struck the rear portion of the trailer of the parked semi-tractor-trailer. Witnesses to the crash pulled Mr. Newman from the vehicle and began performing CPR. He was transported to Hendrick where he was later pronounced deceased. Next of kin has been notified.

Mr. Newman was not wearing his seat-belt. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The driver of the flipped semi was ticketed for Failure to Alter Course with Safety. No other severe injuries were reported.
