Collision 1600 State Highway 351 (Crash Report #11-14628) (Press Release)

On Friday, August 19, 2011, at approximately 11:38 am, the Abilene Police Department received a report of a three vehicle collision in the 1600 block of State Highway 351. A 2009 Yamaha R6 motorcycle was Westbound in the inside lane of 1600 State Highway 351. A 2011 GMC Acadia was Eastbound in the center lane of State Highway 351, turning left into a private drive. The two vehicles collided near a private drive in the 1600 block of Highway 351. After the initial impact, the 2011 GMC Acadia struck a 2008 GMC Acadia, which was waiting to exit the same private drive to proceed Westbound on Highway 351.

The operator of the motorcycle, Charles Ray Gibbs, a 21 year old white male of Abilene, was pronounced dead at the scene by Taylor County Justice of the Peace David M. Pueschel. Next of kin notification has been made by members of the Abilene Police Department.

A 35 year old male passenger of the 2011 GMC Acadia was transported to Hendrick Medical Center by ambulance and, at the time of this release, has been transported by helicopter to United Medical Center in Lubbock. At the time of transport he was listed in serious condition.

This crash is under investigation by members of the Abilene Police Department’s Traffic Division. It is believed that speed may be a factor in the crash. More information may be released as it becomes available.
